Help us spruce up BIG’s new home! Baltimore Improv Group (BIG) begins its 11th season producing live improvised comedy for Baltimore at the Mercury Theater (1823 N. Charles St.) in Station North. What began as 4 strangers meeting in a row house basement in 2004 has grown to 50 performers performing over 100 shows a year. BIG runs the annual Baltimore Improv Festival, teaches hundreds of adults, teens and kids in our classes, and is a registered artist with the Young Audiences of Maryland (YAMD).
Now, for the first time, BIG has its own home theater. And like a lot of first homes, it is a bit of a fixer upper. We are currently in the process of upgrading and rehabbing The Mercury so that it can be a suitable performance space not only for BIG, but other Baltimore performing artists. Interrobang Theatre will be producing their upcoming season at the theater, and the Mercury is one of the performance spaces for the 2014 Charm City Fringe Festival.
Put simply we are converting an open space in a row house into a true black box theater. We’ve already started this project; we would love for you to share in its successful completion.
What We Need & What You GetThe Mercury Theater needs a lighting grid, lighting instruments, audio system, and tables and fridge for a lobby; not to mention a thorough cleaning and sprucing up with new signage, painting, pictures and so on.
We are looking to raise $7500. The Raised money will be used as follows.
Moving into the Mercury Theater is not only an investment in the future of BIG as a performing organization, but in the ongoing expansion of Station North as an Arts hub for Baltimore. One of the main obstacles preventing new performing companies from giving their art to Baltimore is the lack of adequate and affordable performance spaces. Upgrading the Mercury will add to the options for these young companies.
Every dime BIG raises in this drive will be used to upgrade the Mercury.
Other Ways You Can Help. If you can’t afford to make a donation at this time, you can still help BIG Beautify the Mercury. Please consider sharing the link to our campaign. And come check out a show at the Mercury. Full schedule at bigimprov.org
