Leap and the Net Will Appear
The 9th Annual Baltimore Improv Festival
This little Improv aphorism has driven not just our performances, but our development as an organization since our founding in 2004. Nine years ago, BIG was a collection of less than 20 performers who considered it a busy month if we had two shows. So the thought of running a Festival in the 150 seat Theater Project over three nights, and hosting troupes from the UCB, Philly, DC and elsewhere seemed over-ambitious at best, deranged at worst.
We had no idea how to run a Festival or what it would demand of us. Not everything was perfect. No A/C plus August, meant audience and performers soaking wet the entire weekend. (Don’t worry the Theater Project has working A/C now).
But it was also a transformative weekend for BIG. We saw performances from Caveat from DC and Rare Bird Show from Philly that remain amongst the best Improv sets ever seen on a Baltimore stage. And we saw that BIG troupes could play on the same stage with these great performers. And we could hold our own.
Since then, we’ve hosted the Festival at two other locations, tried holding it in the Fall, and come back home to the Theater Project and the last week of July. The Baltimore Improv Festival has featured troupes from across the nation, a round of the Air Sex championships, Improvised Musicals, Comedy in a lifeboat, sets with Audience members, and more laughs than any week should be able to contain. It remains the biggest, most demanding, most fun event we produce each year. And we are thrilled to have you all be a part of it.
See you there.
